Dallas Johns Family-My Direct Ancestor

Across the ocean lies my ancestor's home in Africa. It is the place that saw the birth of all humans on this earth. The original woman and man. I am from the Bantu or Igbo community according to all accounts I have researched so far. This blog site is all about providing information on DNA testing, research, the impact on African Americans and possible uses of genealogical research to identify your ancestors. I most confess I have European ancestors because of the slave trade and rape of African American women during slavery. We came not voluntarily but by forced. My great-great-great-great grandfather was a slaveholder in Wake County, NC as his father in Goochland County, Virginia, his brothers and other relatives in colonial America. My great great great grandfather and his two brothers were born slave in Wake County, NC to John B. Johns and an African slave unknown. The Johns Family History Association claims they were married but no evidence has ever been produced. DNA testing has however proven that I am a direct descendant with several descendent tested.

I had to rap my head around this bit of information to accept: 1. We can not pick and select our relatives both direct and collateral, 2. We all are from one place and that is Africa period, 3. If DNA segments match up I need to accept that for a number of reasons, a. With the movement of slaves from one plantation to another, b. stud services employed by some slaveholders, and 3. Name changes after the Civil War. It would be hard to identify relatives without DNA testing.

STILL I RISE by Maya Angelo

Over the next several months I will provide information on DNA in layman terms and I promise no quizzes.
